Anticipating Departure

Well -- I have to say I am beginning to get just a little bit excited. It's just three days to lift off, when I will embark on my first ever journey to Africa, to visit the projects in Tanzania, Uganda and Congo that are supported by the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada. As the Executive Director of the Institute here in Toronto I have spent the past year raising funds and awareness of the Institute's incredible work to protect chimpanzees and their habitat, and now I will have a chance to experience it all directly.

I love to travel, but this will be a pretty immense trip -- three African countries in two weeks -- which means I will spend almost as much time on the plane or in the airport as I will on the ground. But I know it's going to be worth it!

For someone who has been a fan of the work of Jane Goodall since my teen years, and an even bigger fan of our closest animal relatives, this is a dream come true. So, I've had my jabs, got my malaria pills, am almost clear about my itinerary and think I'm ready -- now if only I could get my passport back from the Ethiopian Embassy....

Stay tuned for the next -- hopefully from Dar es Salaam or Gombe -- or whenever I can get my hands on a computer!
